Tradisi membangun menara diawali oleh Khalifah Al-Walid ketika memugar bekas basilika Santo John (Yahya) menjadi sebuah masjid besar, yang kemudian menjadi Masjid Agung Damaskus. Pada bekas basilika tersebut tadinya terdapat dua buah menara yang berfungsi sebagai penunjuk waktu: lonceng pada siang hari dan kerlipan lampu pada malam hari.Menara itu sendiri merupakan salah satu ciri khas bangunan Byzantium.
